Courageous & Strong: The Ice Cream Taste Test

Some Girl Scout troops regularly include a snack in their meeting times. Our troop meets weekly, after dinner, and for an hour and a half. That “half” is quickly allocated to opening, closing, and generally shuffling around between activities.

Sometimes, though, a snack or food item is a really engaging activity for the kids, so if you’re looking for something fun to do while teaching (or reiterating) the concepts of being courageous and strong, I highly recommend the Ice Cream Taste Test as a fun addition.

For our meeting, in which our Daisies earned their red petal, and our Brownies worked toward their Senses badge while revisiting the Courageous and Strong line of the Girl Scout Law, we worked through the activities presented in our council’s volunteer toolkit. For Daisies, this included learning about Malala Yousafzai, talking about characters in movies and books that are courageous, and exploring ways that we can be courageous ourselves.

Now, For the Ice Cream

Of course, as a considerate and caring scout leader, you would never trick your scouts with fish-flavored ice cream. This is a kind test of courage, in which your scouts are given 4 flavors of ice cream, and a worksheet of flavors to guess for each.

Ice Cream Taste Test with Ice Cream and Sprinkles

Supplies

  • Bowls (you can also use small cups)

  • Spoons

  • Ice Cream Scoop

  • Approximately 4 pints of ice cream in different flavors

  • Courageous and Strong Ice Cream Worksheet (below)

  • Permanent markers if using disposable dishes, washable if not

  • Crayons/pencils/markers for writing

Instructions

  1. Label either the cups or quadrants/sides of the bowls 1, 2, 3, 4.

  2. Scoop one flavor consistently in each number 1 spot, number 2 spot, etc.

  3. Pass out the ice cream cups/bowls to each scout, ensuring they each get one of each sample.

  4. Pass out the worksheets.

  5. Have them taste test and guess the flavors by writing the number of the bowl/cup next to each guess on the paper. There will be more choices than ice cream samples!

  6. Have them announce their guesses and share the answers when the ice cream is gone.

We had a lot of fun with this, as one girl announced the flavors, sometimes throwing in a “gross” flavor for fun. We had a lot of laughs, and of course, ice cream!

Note: please take any dietary or sensory issues into account for this activity.

I’ve included the worksheet we used, along with a blank one for customization, below.

Happy scouting!
